Week One - Filming & Edit Workshop

This week we started filming our production of 'the encounter' which Danni and I renamed to 'Welcome to the Band'. To begin the week we chose music to have as a backing track in production, we chose Cherry Bomb by The Runaways as the song is catchy, fast and upbeat which is the complete opposite to the pace interview but exactly the type of music that the 'band members' of Incubation listen to.

During filming we use varied shot types: Close Ups, Mid Shots, Long Shots, a two shot and Over The Shoulder shots for our Shot Reverse Shot sequence.

Our Establishing Shot is of a music studio door with a sign saying 'LEAD SINGER WANTED' in capitals. We used this to show the audience where the interview will take place, and establish the basic concept of what the interview will entail. Also, this shot helps the audience to understand where the Interviewee is in the next scene, as she is getting ready to go into the room. This gives the audience the idea that the girl is a singer, that connotes she is music and talented, which she is.

this tilt up shows Britney's outfit.
In this scene we used a Tilt Up to show the full body and outfit of the interviewee waiting to be interviewed for the lead vocalist in Incubation. This tilt shows the interviewee fixing her hair and making sure she looks nice. This connotes she always likes to look good, and takes pride in her appearance. The outfit is very casual which connotes she is relaxed and easy going. Her bright red converses with different patterned laces (one set crossed and one set straight) may connote that the singer has a unique voice/personality and that she likes to stand out from the crowd. The tilt is a good way for the audience to be first introduced to the interviewee, as they cant make / be sure of what they expect first thing when they just see her feet. This creates suspense for the audience.

The Match On Action shot is one of the 3 main continuity editing examples which we had to use in this piece. In our piece it was as the interviewee enters the interview room. Its a tricky shot to edit but ours worked significantly well. It's the basic foundations for the 180 Degree Rule (as seen in the Shot Reverse Shot below), as everything stays in the same position throughout the shot, and the actors do not change sides. The match on action shot was used to show the interviewee coming through the door and sitting down so scene flows, and it portrays a continuous sense of the same action (walking through the door) rather than two separate thing e.g. the interviewee outside the door *cut* the interviewee through the door *cut* the interviewee sitting on the chair. It is a continuous movement which looks good.

The Shot Reverse Shot technique is good for an interview like in our piece because you get to see the reaction of the Interviewer/Interviewee when the other person is talking. It is also crucial to not break the 180 Degree Rule, which we didn't, so the scenes all flow and there is no confusion for the audience. Also in a Shot Reverse Shot, the Over the Shoulder shots that we used creates a sense of juxtaposition between the characters and can help the audience establish character relationships, even though they've just met. It's a great way to show facial expressions and body language between the two characters as they engage in conversation.

Also this week, I composed a script for the production for the brief dialogue section, in which i also made a persona for the band, interviewer and interviewee. The script helps the audience to find more out about the band, their influences. Even though the dialogue was not important for this exercise, we wanted to make it as interesting as possible, and create an atmosphere for the scene.

Interviewer:
''Whiskey? *tilts glass* Thanks for coming to audition, I'm Lolita and i play guitar in Incubation. We have a post-punk rock kinda vibe. We adore Joy Division, The Cure and The Smiths..."

Interviewee:

"Well I'm Zoey and I saw your opportunity for the lead vocals in your band and i was like.. 'they look PERFECT'..."

Interviewer:

"Incubation take so much inspiration from Joy Division, do you know what song you want to sing? Love Will Tear Us Apart? That's a classic..."

Introduction & Storyboard for Edit Workshop

Our first task for our AS course is to do a preliminary exercise, working in groups of 2/3 to plan , stage, film an edit a sequence called 'The Encounter'. Editing will be done individually.
The brief of the exercise is a character opens a door, sits down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.

The 'encounter' must include:

  • A range of camera shots/angles.
  • Continuity - Everything has to be in the exact place through the whole sequence.
  • A wild cat soundtrack.
  • Joy Division
  • NO zooms

Danni and I decided to do a clip of a guitarist from a band interviewing a potential new lead singer/vocalist. The band is a post-punk rock band called Incubation, heavily influenced by Joy Division. This week we planned our storyboard, Danni planned scenes 1- 7, and i planned scenes 8-13.

Our scenes include a variety of shots and techniques including:

  • Match On Action ( 4 & 5a)
  • Shot Reverse Shot / Reaction shots (8, 9 & 10)
  • 180 Degree Rule.
